to help you discover cutting edge information and alternatives.

Who Is Patricia S. Lemer?

Patricia S. Lemer is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and practiced as an educational diagnostician for over 40 years. She is the author of numerous articles, chapters in books, and the blog, "After the Diagnosis, Then What?" Her books include EnVISIONing a Bright Future: Interventions that Work for Children and Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (2008), Outsmarting Autism: The Ultimate Guide to Management, Healing, and Prevention (2014) and Outsmarting Autism, Updated and Expanded: Build Healthy Foundations for Communication, Socialization, and Behavior at All Ages (2019).

She was co-founder and Executive Director of Developmental Delay Resources (DDR), and international, non-profit organization for 20 years. DDR merged with Epidemic Answers in 2013. Patricia served as Board Chair for 3 years, and then retired from the Board. She is honored now to be Board Chair Emeritus. After combining the two organizations, over 400 articles from 15 years of DDR newsletters were updated and appear on the Epidemic Answers website. Patricia's books on Outsmarting Autism are a part of the curriculum for the Epidemic Answers Health Coach Training Program, in which she delivers 3 modules.

She holds a Masters of Education in counseling and learning disabilities from Boston College and a Masters in Business from John Hopkins University.Ms. Lemer teaches continuing education courses about the role of vision disorders in developmental delays, including autism spectrum disorders. In 2019, Ms. Lemer, "The Diagnostic Diva" launched a weekly podcast, I Have A Child Who... with Kristi Wees, "The Curious Chemist." The goal is to bring back some old ideas to a new generation of parents and practitioners. Each week Patricia and Kristi interview pioneers in a variety of therapies, such as nutritional medicine, that have been forgotten or not given the respect they deserve because of the predominant use of pharmaceuticals and therapies that treat symptoms rather than target underlying causes.

Ms. Lemer served as a Study Leader for six years at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where she shared her knowledge about autism and staying healthy in a toxic world with seniors and retirees. Patty serves on the Advisory Board of Spectrum Tech Trade School, a 501c3 nonprofit, which aims to be the future of Autism Education and Training.

Patricia lives in Pittsburgh, PA and is the mother of an adult daughter and the grandmother of Penelope, born in August, 2006. She is a world traveler, having recently visited Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Barcelona, and Paris. For relaxation she makes one-of-a-kind beaded jewelry, quilts, and knitted apparel.

FEATURE ARTICLE
Find a New Order of Love
by Guy Finley -
"Letting Go" Tuesdays, 6pm PT

The power of being unconditionally kind towards those who unconsciously hurt us is just one of the gifts of higher love. In a way, it gives our heart "eyes" that can see what they were blind to before.

For example, by its light we're able to see that the needs of others are really the same as our own, an insight that makes it impossible to mistake their pain as being somehow less important than our own. So that now when someone dumps on us a pain they don't know what to do with - demanding we pay for a suffering they only know to blame on us - we're able to do what before would have been impossible:

Without any outward announcement to mark this moment, instead of being dragged into some too-familiar fight, we say, silently, to the other person the healing words, "This one is on me."

We agree to make this sacrifice for the sake of a love that's greater than the both of us, and we consciously refuse to say or to do a single thing to make their pain worse.

It's not because we're somehow better, superior to others. It's because there is a higher power at work here - an order of love that is incapable of being unkind, even to someone who may have hurt us. And it makes possible a kind of sacrifice of one's self that ego can't conceive, let alone find the will to enact.

This is an act of unconditional love. It is true relationship magic.

Natural Menopause Tips
by Linda Mackenzie, C.H.T., Ph.D. (c)

Women who choose not to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may choose natural methods to help alleviate menopausal symptoms. These mind/body methods treat the whole person to make menopause a more positive experience.

1. Aromatherapy works by using the sense of smell to generate symptomatic relief of emotional and physical problems. Oils used as a bath, perfume, massage or inhalant have shown positive results. For example try these oils for these associated symptoms:

Hot Flash - rose or peppermint oil; fatigue -rosemary;
Low Libido -cardamom;
Vaginal Dryness -neroli or geranium;
Urinary Incontinence -eucalyptus;
Emotional Stress -lavender or jasmine;
Overall Relief -lemon balm, rose or cypress.

2. Deep Breathing and focusing on the breath activates the major quieting nerve of the body -the vagus nerve. This helps to immediately lower blood pressure, heart, pulse, and respiratory rates to aid in reducing anxiety and overall stress.

3. Diet is one of the most important keys to help menopause. In parts of India, China and Africa they do not experience hot flashes. Lesser menopause symptoms are experienced in countries whose cultures eat a mostly vegetarian, high fiber, low fat diet. It also includes leafy green vegetables and fatty acids, such as flaxseed or evening primrose oil, (which have estrogen properties). They also avoid, eliminate or reduce caffeine, refined sugar, refined flour and grains, salt, alcohol, nicotine, dairy products, spicy foods, artificial colorings, flavorings and preservatives.

4. Education about the menopausal process is the first defense against menopausal symptoms. In the past, menopause was shrouded in mystery and often viewed as a negative experience and a precursor to death. In previous generations our life span was shorter and communication about menopause was considered an unmentionable subject. Menopause is a natural part of life. Eliminate its mystery and misconceptions and women are better prepared to handle the outcome.

5. Exercise helps to minimize and eliminate menopausal symptoms, as well as, osteoporosis. Try yoga, aerobics or walking for thirty (30) minutes, three times a week.

6. Herbs are part of nature's pharmacy. Herbs have many different properties and certain herbs have phytoestrogen (plant estrogens) qualities. For example try these herbs for these associated symptoms:

Hot Flash and Night Sweats - red clover, chaste berry (vitex) or black cohash;
Low Libido - panax ginseng or damiana;
Vaginal Dryness and Tissue Weakness - yellow dock, motherwort, or raspberry leaf and calendula cream;
Urinary Incontinence - garlic, cranberry, uva ursi and saw palmetto
Hormonal Balance -black cohash, anise, licorice root, wild yam cream;
Emotional Stress -St. John's wort, kava, dong quai, blessed thistle.

7. Homeopathy was discovered in the 1700ís and is based on unblocking the body's own healing system. Homeopathy is a non-toxic therapy with no known side effects. It is safe to use in conjunction of traditional, medical, psychological and physical therapies.

The HealthyLife.net Recipe of the Month

Chicken MacSoup

Cooking Time: 3-4 hours, 1-Soup Pot

1 3-4 lb. chicken, (cut into pieces)
8 cups cold water
1 medium onion (minced)
3-4 carrots (cut in 1" pieces)
2 stalks of celery (cut into 1" pieces)
3 medium potatoes (peeled and cut into 1" cubes)
1 tablespoon sea salt
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon sage
1/2 teaspoon rosemary
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/8 teaspoon coriander
2 bay leaves
1 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup basmati rice

In a large soup pot place chicken pieces, add water and bring to a rapid boil.
Add onions, carrots, celery, potatoes and spices. Stir and bring back to a boil. Reduce heat to slow simmer. Cook 3-4 hours.
With slotted spoon, take out bones and chicken pieces from the soup and place in a bowl. Remove any bones from the chicken pieces. Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces and return chicken meat to the pot. Throw out bones. The last 1/2 hour of cooking add peas and rice.

Option: Instead of rice, or in addition to rice, add 1/2 cup of quinoa pasta or quinoa or brown rice linguini broken into thirds to the soup mixture.

FOR CHICKEN BROTH: Omit rice and peas. Cook remaining ingredients 3-4 hours. Strain soup through a sieve and serve the broth or use the broth for cooking rice or in other recipes.
